Courier Sun 28th October 2009 by Shelley Lowe
NIPPERS: What a great day Sunday was, our first
carnival for the season, and boy did we show them. The weather was perfect,
and with great ocean conditions, although had some complaints about the sand
being too hot.
We had 25 nippers arrive at Jetty beach full of anticipation. In trepidation,
this was the first selection of inter branch and the opposition were reported
to be hot, we were not to be disappointed though. Overall, the results once
again showed that Urunga is a force to be reckoned with, a full report with
results will follow next week. Many of our nippers were competing for the first
time, and by the look on their faces, we will be seeing them at many more carnivals
as they seemed to have a great time - as I'm sure everyone else did! We want
to say, our nippers conducted themselves with pride and sportsmanship and we
are all very proud of them. Thank you to all those who participated and helped
out with water safety, to all parents and officials, we cannot do this without
all of you. Remember next Sunday (1st Nov) is back to normal nippers at the
beach (Hungry Head). Thanks to our sponsors Urunga Golf Club and Nathan Cardow
Real Estate. Don't forget it's not too late to register for nippers and join
in on all the fun, see Garry or Chantal at Bellingen Newsagency or Sunday at
Hungry Head. See you all at the beach.
SENIORS: A big congratulations to Shari Shiels
for being PATROL PERSON OF THE MONTH! Photo and details in next week’s
paper. We had glorious weather over the weekend, making patrols a pleasure!
Their was plenty of activity happening with watching the whales breach and having
fun, and watching our boat crews train in the surf. These guys have been doing
a lot of training over the last few months and this weekend they have their
chance to show off their skills at their next carnival at Red Rock this weekend.
So pack the picnic basket, come on down to Corindi Beach, and show your support!
Starting time 11am. Boat carnivals are always very exciting to watch, depending
on the surf, they can be very nerve racking too. If you need to do extra patrol
hours, please come down and help do water safety for the Nippers. They have
huge numbers this year and will ALWAYS welcome any helpers, thank you. New uniforms
have arrived, we need Patrol Captains to ensure their crews are fitted out.
There is a supply of tea, coffee & milk in the clubhouse for patrolling
members to help themselves. We have sunscreen now in the tower and in the trailer
(as we often have general public ask for some). If there are any other requirments
you should need, please write on the blackboard in the tower and we’ll
endeavour to meet your needs.
PATROLS: SAT 31st Oct – Patrol 4: Tracy Neaves,
Jason & Vicky Ford, Kathryn Gibney, Jack Chaffey & Andrew Erlandson.
SUN 1 Nov: Patrol 5: Jenni Sparks, Linq Griffiths, Irene, Graeme & Jason
Griffiths, Rachael Noble, Mick & Maree Wood.
PICK THE JOKER RAFFLE DUTY: Grant Lyttle & his helper? Just a reminder
GAMBLERS & GANGSTERS NIGHT will be held in
conjunction with one of our major sponsors the Ocean View Hotel on 21st Nov.
More details in next weeks column.
Urunga Surf club would like to thank all our sponsors, your names will be in
next week’s column! Cheers!!

Juniors: What a great day the nippers had on Sunday.
We had our proficiency day down on the river at the Sailing club, and we couldn't
have dialled up better weather. All those who were present passed their proficiencies.
Remember if you want to compete in carnivals you will need to see Garry or Chantal
and make sure you have completed your proficiency.
Next Sunday will see us make the trek up the coast to Coffs Harbour, to make
an appearance at the first carnival of the season (Jetty Carnival).
This carnival starts at 8.30am so don't be late. If you have not yet given your
name to Chantal please contact her ASAP.
It is still not to late to register for the season just call Garry 66551449
or see him at Bellingen Newsagency.
Don't forget that there will not be any nippers this Sunday (25th Oct) due to
the carnival. See you all on the beach.
The Boaties headed up to Cudgen for their first
carnival for the season. The Masters Crew did really well, considering there
were no waves to back on and a strong southerly howling, they still made it
to the finals and rowed a close race gaining 2nd position. Well done boys!!
Looks like all that hard training is paying off. Next carnival for the boys
will be a 2 day carnival at Red Rock at the end of this month, come on up and
support your local Urunga
SLSC.
Patrols this week: Sat 24th – Patrol 2: Tim
Rodgers, Evan Beeby, Vanessa Nugent, Mark Davidson, Asley & Hayden Underhill
& Jake Williams. Sun 25th – Patrol 3: Terry & Shelley Lowe, Barry
Smith, Ian Wallace, Peter & Lee Bulanyi, Graham Matthews & Jason Wray.
Pick the Joker Roster: Jess Carroll & Jenny Stamel. Remember Saturday, 21st Nov with our GAMBLERS & GANGSTERS night at the OVH.

Sunday saw a great turn up for the start of our Nippers season, with plenty
of old and new faces braving the cold and wet weather to join us down on the
beach.
Unfortunately the seas were too rough for us to do much, but the kids had a
good time playing on the sand with a few introductory games and tour of club
house etc.
Next week we will all be meeting down at the Urunga Sailing Club (9.00am start)
and a BBQ to follow for the kids.
It's not too late to register if you have kids that are interested, make any
enquiries to Garry Howe at the Bellingen Newsagency Ph: 66551449 Thanks to our
sponsors Nathan Cardow R/E and Coffs Ex Services Club

See you all on the beach

Last weekend was good with patrols underway for the new season. Saturday proved
to be beautiful weather, not so good for the Patrol 2 on Sunday, however , this
didn’t stop the boaties going out, providing a bit of carnage for the
onlookers. Monday was a breezy day on the beach, but this did not deter the
bathers, all doing the right thing and swimming between the flags.
GAMBLERS & GANGSTERS NIGHT on Saturday, 21 October will be held in conjunction
with our major sponsors the Ocean View Hotel at the OVH. This will be a great
night with prizes for the best dressed. Get your costumes ready!
NIPPERS SEASON STARTS THIS SUNDAY, 11 October.
Anyone wishing to join the nippers can do so by contacting Gary Howe at Bellingen
Newsagency on 6655 1449 or show up at our Club House at 8.45am Sunday morning.
It’s never too late to join our team of nippers with heaps of fantastic,
fun and energetic aquatic activities each Sunday, giving the children confidence
in the surf.
SURFBOAT TRAINING THIS WEEK: Tuesday 4.30 Dr Harrys,
Thursday 4.30 Dr Harrys & Sunday 9.00 at Club House.
PATROL ROSTER THIS WEEK: SATURDAY - Patrol 4: Tracy

URUNGA SURF CLUB BUSINESS HOUSES BOAT RACE DAY
Due to the flooding in Urunga in March this year our Business Houses Boat Race
Day was rescheduled for last weekend on the Kalang River. A good turn out was
evident but naturally numbers were down this year due to the timing of the event.
We will be back to our usual time next year, that being the first Sunday in
May.
Some interesting costumes were evident on the day which enhanced the convivial
nature of the event. The girls from the Ocean View Hotel were outstanding with
their costumes, coming dressed as beer bottles with twist tops as well attached.
The river bank was speckled with spectators as firstly the Women’s Crews
took to the water. A great rowing feat by the girls from the OVH (Linda, Nicole,
Kelly and Leanne) blitzed the field with three wins from three races and having
the fastest combined times were declared the winners. The men’s crews
were next off the mark with a tightly contested series with the Bellingen Golf
Club just nudging out the boys from the OVH by four seconds over the three race
series. Bellingen Council proved too strong in the over 200 years category with
Bob Malone heading up the team although Mayor Mark Troy called on a substitute
in the guise of Fred Keizer to row for him and with Baz Smith and Grant Lyttle
joining in the Mayor’s celebration.
Special mention to the two Women’s Crews and a Men’s Crew from the
Coffs Harbour Hospital Emergency Care Unit for attending the day and competing
with much enthusiasm with slipping and sliding, crabbing and crawling being
the order of the day.
A wonderful day was had by all and we hope to see many more next year in May.
Urunga Surf Club would like to thank all the crews for participating in this
annual event.
