What a terrific night we had at the “Gamblers & Gangsters Fund Raiser
Night’ hosted by the Ocean View Hotel. The night was well attended and
everyone enjoyed the night immensely! (I hear there will be another one in the
future?) We would like to give a huge “Thank You” to the volunteers
who manned the stations so the crowd could have fun, without you, this would
not have been such a success. Another thank you to those who dug deep into their
pockets and pulled out their ‘Surf Club Casino Dollars” to bid on
the major auction items for the night (Amount of monies raised will be in next
week’s column). Thanks to Linda & Corey from the Ocean View Hotel
for their tireless efforts in sourcing the excellent auction items and putting
in many hours organising the night! Thank you to our Sponsors on the night;
DJ Tilt, Urunga Spar; Urunga Fite Gym, OVH; Morrisons Electrical; Solar Inverters;
Shelley’s Bootcamp; Hair with Flair; Geoff King Motors; Carlton; Bundaberg
Rum; BP Urunga;
This weekend is the COFFS CRAFT CARNIVAL at Park Beach. Our Club will be entering
two boat crews, the MASTERS and the RESERVES! This is the second biggest boat
event next to the Aussie Titles. Lots of action, craft and skill from surf Club’s
Australia wide will be in attendance. Come on down, be entertained and support
your Club. GO URUNGA GO!!
NIPPERS: What a great carnival our kids had at
Sawtell last Sunday. The surf was kind,
however, the tide was high so all the water events needed to be completed prior
to starting the beach events. This meant most of the kids competed in their
swim event then on finishing this they were being immediately called up for
the next event, the board race. Well done to all the children that competed,
a great achievement to be
there for the club supporting and giving it your best I am sure there were many
tired bodies at the end of the day. What I saw throughout the day which makes
us proud, were Urunga kids smiling and having fun, participating and just giving
it a go and team-ship being fair and friendly to other competitors, GO URUNGA.
THE RESULTS: We as a small club came 4th over-all, what a great effort. Throughout
the day the kids where coming up saying I got a 3rd or I came in 5th and we
had some that came up and they came first and by the end of the day we had 3
pages full of our kids winning. Some on the day found it hard, however some
for the first time actually finished their events which is a major achievement
and it is the same with many who have not won yet, the main thing is that you
are competing, enjoying and giving it a go. If you keep trying you will get
there in the end. So enjoy! We would like to congratulate Naomi for coming first
in the Under 12 board race, you caught that wave all the way to shore and it
was a great moment, you were so proud with your arm raised high, good on you.
Not for a long time has there been a Urunga person chosen for the interbranch
team, Zac will be representing this region in the Under 13 water events, well
done we all wish you the best in your training and competing GO ZAC. This Sunday
was a windy hot and wild day down at Hungry Head beach, great turn out and a
great effort to all that swam, there was a major sweep running North to South,
pat yourselves on the back for having a go. Most of the day was spent on the
beach doing flags, relay wade races with the lagoon helping us out with board
training. By the end of the day the tide was coming down a
channel into the lagoon, the kids were having a ball on the boards or just floating
with the fast flowing water, even some of the green caps got involved. It was
a great way to end the day at the beach. 11 o'clock came quickly and we packed
up and headed off to the Meet and Greet at Jody and Daniel's of 'Bellingen Canoeing'.
What a wonderful afternoon had by all, kids and adults alike having fun in the
Bellinger River swimming, paddling and chatting to old and new friends, a memorable
day. Thank you so much Jody and Daniel for having us all it was an exceptional
gesture on what turned out to be the most wonderful spot to be on an absolutely
scorcher of a day. Next Sunday is the Hughgo Smyth Memorial Carnival Under 11
upwards. Contact Chantal for more details, only a few of the senior kids will
be competing, therefore Normal Nippers will be held at Hungry Head next week
- see you there. Thanks to our sponsors CEX and Nathan Cardow Real Estate.

SENIORS: It was a busy weekend for our Seniors at Scotts Head. The Boaties took part in the North Coast Boat Series on Sat and Sun. There were favourable conditions on the Saturday with a flat row, but a short tough sprint for the men. Masters did well picking up 2nds and 3rds, while the reserves picked up 3rds for the day. Sunday the surf took on a nasty shore dump which made the boys hit out hard off the blocks. Masters gained a 4th, 3rd and finished the day with a commendable 2nd! The Reserves weren’t quite as lucky. Tony was back from Moree and helped the guys sweep the Crews. Tony was happening to be sweeping the Reserves when the ‘wave of the day’ stood up out of nowhere and saw Tony take a dip (head first) into refreshing waters. Boys finished the race in 5th position, being a good recovery out of 7. There was a Masters Carnival with 160 competitors at the other end of the Beach, which saw Garry Howe (our only competitor) do Urunga proud. Garry competed in the 30 to 39 year age group taking on these positions: 1st sprint; 2nd Flags; 3rd Board; 5th Swim; 5th Ski (first time on ski in a race)then he joined forces with Woopi and Sawtell competitors to form teams for Taplin Relay, Ski relay and Board Relay. All in all, a top weekend and well represented by the Urunga Touring Team.
Our proficiency day was held in Urunga on Saturday,
with excellent surf and swim times. Well done to those who passed their proficiencies.
Our next PROFECIENCY DATE WILL BE HELD 6thDecember at 9.00am. The patrols were
kept very busy on the weekend, cleaning up the beach, yet again, after the floods.
These people need a big thankyou for keeping our beach safe for the public to
use and minimising the debri on the beach.
SURF BOAT TRAINING: Tues & Thurs 4.30pm Anchors Boat Ramp and SAT 9am Hungry Head (due to our Gamblers & Gangsters night – training will be Sat this week instead of Sunday).

NIPPERS: What a weekend! Understandably there were
only 18 Nippers that ventured out to training; this was to be an indoor session
which was enjoyed by all. From green caps up all nippers learnt flag signals
and the basics of CPR, practicing on Annie the manikin. Many issues were spoken
about the main ones were do not panic, ring 000 in an emergency and check for
dangers so you don’t get hurt and then you can help the patient. For many
this many have been there first time learning about CPR, but it will not be
there last, it is a life saving skill to know. Thank you to all the parents

NIPPERS:Another great day at Hungry Head beach
for our Nippers, after the recent heavy rains and flood we were not really sure
what the conditions would be like, but as luck will have it they were excellent.
We had a little debris that had washed ashore but once we cleaned some of this
up there was no stopping our nippers. We had a great day with many having their
first official day at nippers, the lagoon / creek had opened up and the Greencaps
had a ball playing in the shallows with their age managers whilst the older
nippers were out in the ocean learning and improving their board skills. Reminder
to everyone that the “Meet and Greet” is on Sunday 22nd November
(after Nippers). Next carnival is at Sawtell ,Sunday 15th November, and U/14's
development camp is on at Nambucca Heads 7th/8th November. It still not too
late to join up. See Garry or Chantal at Bellingen Newsagency or come to the
Hungry Head Tower during patrols. Thanks to our sponsors Nathan Cardow Real
Estate and Hyne Timbers. See you all on the beach, Garry.
SENIORS: Last weekend saw our Boaties travel to
Corindi for Round 3 of the North Coast Surf Boat Series. Masters & Reserves
rowed only 2 races on the Saturday as the conditions were too treacharous to
continue all races due to a nasty shore break and a strong North Easterly blowing.
These conditions didn’t perturb our boys at all, proving good results
with 2 x firsts and 2 seconds. Round 4 on Sunday the carnival was moved to Arrawarra
with smooth calm surf and beautiful weather. Although the boys rowed hard, they
struggled to back up with the same results as Saturday, gaining 2nds and 3rds
(I believe they have to visit the Doctor again – “Dr Pain”,
that is!). Well done lads, you are doing Urunga proud!!

PATROLS: SAT - Patrol 6: Garry Howe, Craig Delahunty, Werner Koudela, fay Sticker & Denis Forbes. SUN – Patrol 1: Paul Bastick, Jarrod Greenwood, Radio Operator, Lyndee Thomas, Shari Sheils, Jess Carroll & Jenny Stamel.
PICK THE JOKER ROSTER: Bob & Tania Malone. We would like to make a special thankyou to our sponsors, Lindsay Bros Transport, Aarvbee, Ocean View Hotel & Anchors Wharf Café.
