URUNGA SLSC NEWS
“BUILDER’S PICNIC DAY” – Monday, 7th DECEMBER. The Annual Builder’s Picnic Golf Day is on again this year with a 9am shotgun start. Be there by 8am to allow time to make it to your tees. Hurry & get your teams of three organised, with names on the list in the Golf Club foyer. The event is a 3 Man Ambrose and the cost is $40 per player. The fee includes green fees, food, complimentary drink and all players win a prize. It is traditionally a great day and the field is filling quickly so hurry on down and get your names in before they go. The inclement weather throughout the year has meant the event was on, then off and now back on again. Consequently the Surf Club is looking for sponsors for the day? They can be Minor Sponsors, supplying prizes in sets of three, or prizes for raffles, or they can be Major Naming Rights Sponsors. Any business or individual who can help should contact Club Treasurer, Al Riddoch (0421 910 248) ASAP with thanks.

The Coffs Craft Carnival was held at Park Beach last weekend. Urunga entered 2 Surf Boat Crews. The “Reggie Reserves” & the “Thirsty Masters”. Reggies rowed well, tried their hardest, but were unable to qualify for the finals. The “Thirsty Masters”, however, did Urunga proud, consisting of our sweep Phil McGuiggan & crew, Barry Smith, Terry Lowe, Jason Ford & Peter Bulanyi (both of these last two men doubled up after rowing for the Reggies – what a mighty effort!)! They came 2nd, 3rd & 4th in their heats, which gained them enough points to qualify to the Semi-finals. Up against stiff competition, the men had to row their best, as only the first 3 over the line qualified to get into the Finals, so this was a tight race, with our Masters & Cudgen Masters coming home on the same wave and both rowing for 3rd position, yells and screams from sweeps and spectators alike, helped the Urunga Masters pip Cudgen at the flags, putting our “thirsty Masters” into the finals! What a nerve racking start for the Finals, with a nasty shore dump pounding the boats, the starter had to wait until even water was under each boat as there was either no water at the sweep end of the boat, or up over the bowmen’s heads at the other end? So this kept everyone in suspense waiting for the gun to go off. BANG, and away they jumped, our Masters got smacked by a few waves straight up, but rowed a strong race turning equal 4th at the cans, when Evans Heads got onto a nice runner taking them straight to a convincing lead. As they rowed toward the wave area, a few waves began appearing and making for a very interesting race with excitement and screams everywhere; Currumbin coming home in 2nd place ended up being in no man’s land & got picked up by a wave and rolled their boat, then Woopi coming in the 3rd position began to slew making our boys look like gaining an equal 3rd, but Woopi successfully recovered, straightened the boat and gained 2nd position, followed by Coffs in 3rd, then came the “Thirsty Masters” being beaten by half a boat length in 4th position. A strong race in which they have done us proud! A mighty effort even to be able to qualify to get into the finals is a feather in their cap! Well done lads, keep up the training as now results are beginning to show. Look out North Coast Boat Series, here we come! Next carnival is held back at Park Beach on 19th December.

A big congratulations to Tracy Neaves for being our diligent Patrol person of the Month! Well done Trace! Huge thanks to our sponsors once again for our “Gamblers & Gangster” Night, we raised $2130 for our Surf Club.
