Vale Simon Dingle: Urunga Surf Club wishes to
express our deepest sympathies to the Dingle Family on the senseless murder
of Simon in Tasmania on Saturday 16th January 2010. Simon was a loveable character
who was a junior member of Urunga Surf Club, played soccer for Urunga and attended
Urunga Primary School. Our thoughts are with Vinny, Bruce and Ross as they come
to grips with their loss. Vinny has been a member of Urunga Surf Club and with
her business, Raleigh Vineyard and Winery, has been a sponsor for many years.
The Funeral Service is on Friday 29th January at 2.30pm at Hogbin Drive Crematorium.
Our Boaties are off to Bonnie Hills on the weekend,
Masters are still holding their own in 3rd position, whilst Reserves are in
very close contention for a podium position. Good luck to you all and fly our
flag high. A few Birthday celebrations will be on the weekend too, so let’s
hope they row like champions and can doubly celebrate afterwards.
We now have new Club Shirts available for $35 each,
please See Chantal or Garry Howe Sunday mornings at beach.
Urunga will be hosting the Senior Branch Carnival
on 7th February and we are asking for helpers on the day to ensure the carnival
runs smoothly. We will also be hosting the Junior Branch
Carnival on the 14th February and a lot of help will be needed please
for this event. Contact Phil McGuiggan 6655 4324 or 0409 041142 or Garry Howe
6655 1449. As with our North Coast Boat Series carnival we ran on 9th January,
we had many willing helpers, all who we appreciate immensely, and the carnival
ran smoothly. We have a terrific little club where everyone jumps in and helps
when needed and it all turns out to be a great day. Thank you to all who are
willing to give a hand. You know the old cliché, a lot of hands make
light work.

Urunga Boaties competed at the Country Championships at South West Rocks on the weekend. We had both Masters and Reserves compete, however, it was the Masters that was in contention once again for a podium finish. They gained 2 x firsts and a second in their heat qualifying them into the Semi finals. Rowing like champions, they secured second place putting them straight into the Finals. All nervous and revved up, the boys rowed as best they could under the conditions, but unfortunately, missed out on the podium and gained 5th position. Well done Men, to even make it to the finals is a HUGE feather in your cap. Keep up the good work, and doing Urunga Surf Club Proud! Garry Howe also competed, results in next week’s column.
Stingers were prevelant on the beach on Sunday, forcing lifesavers to close the beach. This is a shame as they have been showing up the last couple of weeks. Surf Club would like to remind visitors to the beach to swim between the flags.
SURF BOAT TRAINING: Tues & Thurs 4.30pm Anchors Boat Ramp. Sunday training to be advised.

Hungry Head Beach was kept safe on Christmas Day by a dedicated band of volunteer
Surf Lifesavers. Thanks to everyone who gave up some of their Christmas Day
to help out, it was greatly appreciated. Mention must be made of Mushie and
his band of merry helpers who did a great job all day.
Urunga hosted a round of the North Coast Boat Series on the weekend. The beach
had perfect weather, and conditions, and proved to be a very successful carnival.
We had our Masters and Reserves row on the day, both teams did well considering
the changes to boat crews that took place on the day. Get well wishes go to
Mushy after his accident and thanks to Lee for stepping up to the plate and
helping out the Masters Crew (I hear you won’t be able to get her out
of the boat now). 1 lone Urunga Master (Garry Howe) travelled up to Brunswick
Heads to compete in their annual Masters carnival. Weather was perfect and they
even managed to arrange some great waves. Our lone master returned with mixed
results but declaring the day a success, as he managed to complete the entire
ski course without falling off his ski (his first at a carnival!). Some results
were as follows, Surf Ski (mid field). Flags 2nd, Swim 8th overall 4th in age
group. Board 10th overall 5th age group. The last event was the Taplin Relay
in which he combined with Woolgoolga and Coffs Harbour masters and they managed
a respectable 10th. Overall Urunga managed to be placed 16th out of 20 clubs
in the point score which is commendable considering we only had one competitor.
Well done Garry, keep the Urunga spirit alive!
Good luck to our boat crews and competitors heading down to South West Rocks
on the weekend to compete at the Country Championships. Go well Urunga! Congratulations
to Evan Beeby for being Patrol Person of the Month for December 09. Keep up
the good work Evan!
Surf Club would like to remind visitors to the beach to swim between the flags.
NIPPERS: Another picture postcard day at Hungry
Head beach greeted our 2010 returning nippers, great to see you all back and
refreshed after the Christmas break. The surf conditions and weather were fantastic,
that being the case it was a day for full on water activities. The senior nippers
training for there SRC exam whilst the rest of us put in a little extra training
in preparation for the Stramit Country Championships to be held at South West
Rocks this weekend. The young green caps were out in the surf right in front
of the patrol learning how to body surf and generally having fun, way to go
guys. Good luck to all those who are competing, don't forget have fun and try
your best.
