Phil McGuiggan, Urunga SLSC Club Captain, organised to educate a group of 45
overseas students from Southern Cross Uni. They attended Urunga Surf Club on
Saturday afternoon to have explained to them the hazards of rips and the benefits
of swimming between the flags on patrolled beaches in Australia. Phil reinforced
the message for them to know, if they are caught in a rip to swim parallel to
the beach until out of it and most importantly not to PANIC! This was stressed
again and again together with the importance of knowing the location of where
they are so that they can inform the 000 operator in case of an emergency. I
am sure they all got the message of the importance of swimming between the flags.
We also made mention of the dangers in our area of tidal creeks on an outgoing
tide and also the hazards of rock fishing in Australia. The students enjoyed
the talk and were grateful to Phil for sharing his valuable knowledge with them.
NIPPER NEWS: 2010 North Coast Nippers Branch Carnival
Sunday, February the 14th, a big day in more ways than one, Urunga held the
North Coast Nippers Branch Carnival the first time since 1988, what a grand
effort from all that attended. Many thanks to all the competitors it was fantastic
to watch your enthusiasm and excitement for completing the event and/or the
joy of getting a place. There were many winners on the day, but whether you
were a winner or not you should pat yourselves on the back as it was extremely
trying conditions- wind, choppy seas and freezing water conditions. What made
me smile was hearing team members cheering and chanting their team on that shows
team spirit, well done you did us proud Urunga Nippers.
The day started early for some actually it started the day before cleaning and
setting up the beach many helpers came from the seniors and parents we could
not have done this major event without that help. Then early on Sunday 5.00am
for some, some a bit later thank goodness, was all hands on deck to finish off
what had been started the day before. All this effort paid off, our beach and
our club stood out as a great venue for a Carnival, it was a picture, I heard
people say at the end of the day , ‘what a great carnival and venue we
should come back here next year’.
The wind blew all day and began to blow a gale when we decided to take down
the tents. Again everyone pitched in and many hands made light work, we were
then able to enjoy the afternoon celebrating Gary’s 40th, Happy Birthday
Gary.
All in all a great Carnival I would like to thank Gary and Chantal, Craig, and
all the Mums and Dads that helped prior to or on the day we could not have done
it without you. Hungry Head Nippers and Parents you did us proud.

Hungry Head Beach was closed on the weekend due to rough surf conditions. Our carnival we were hosting on Sunday has been postponed due to weather & surf conditions. New date is yet to be advised. We have have a huge weekend at our famous Hungry Head beach as we are hosting the JUNIOR BRANCH CHAMPIONSHIPS here this Sunday. Bring the picnic basket, come on down and have a look at our young local talent. Any volunteers who could help out on the day would be very much appreciated, please ring Phil McGuiggan on 6655 4324 or Garry Howe on 6655 1449 to offer your support. Our BOATIES are off to Yamba on the weekend to compete in another round of the North Coast Boat Series. We are doing very well in the progressive point score, with the Masters re-gaining 2nd position and Reserves a very close 5th. There is nothing in the numbers between 3rd & 5th and we know our reggies can pull it out of their hat and show us they can do it and get back into a podium position. Good luck fellas, we are all barracking for you! New Rash Shirts are available at $40 each. Please see Shelley if you need to acquire one of these. They look very smart in our patriotic blue, yellow and white. We also have new Club Shirts available for the men and ladies (sleeveless design) please see Garry or Chantal on the beach Sunday mornings. Belinda Kennedy was drawn out for the Pick the Joker on Sunday night, although she did not pick the Joker, Belinda still picked $20 for her efforts. Please come along and show your support, buy a ticket, ony $2 per number is all you need to win a tidy $1400 this week. Tickets are on sale between 4 – 6pm each Sunday, and remember you don’t have to be in the Pub at the time of draw to enter. You can choose a card number that has not been turned over, if your name comes out, one of our SLSC delegates will turn your card over for you. You will be advised of your winnings with a phone call. It’s a great fund raiser for our Club and this is valuable money which keeps our club progressing along. Cheers.
